Flyers cut 22 from camp: Sam Morin, Shayne Gostisbehere and Scott Laughton remain

Craig Berube, Ron Hextall and the Flyers made their first round of cuts to 2014 training camp on Wednesday, but three big borderline names still remain: defensemen Samuel Morin and Shayne Gostisbehere, and center Scott Laughton.

Three players — defenseman Travis Sanheim, center Radel Fazleev and winger Nicholas Aube-Kubel — were all sent to their respective major junior league teams, where they will play this season. Those three were all drafted this past year and none were expected to be in camp for more than a quick look and a few games. They all impressed, though, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on them all season long in junior.

19 players were sent to Lehigh Valley Phantoms camp. The biggest surprise among them is defenseman Robert Hagg, who moves down while Morin and Ghost stay up. Hagg seemed like he had the best chance to make the Flyers roster coming into camp — even though it was also a slim chance — as compared to the other two, if for no other reason than his several years of professional experience in Sweden.

But here Ghost and Morin remain. Gostisbehere will likely go down to the AHL in a later cut, and Morin will probably be dropped back to his junior team for his final year of eligibility there before long. But they’re still in camp, and the longer they stick around the more intriguing it’s going to get.

As for Scott Laughton, he hasn’t had the best camp by most accounts, but he’s a player with a ton of potential and more importantly with regular season NHL experience. He’s going to stick around and play for a bit, because there’s no doubt the Flyers want to see more of him.

Here’s the full list of each player in camp and where they are now. Blue means they’ve been sent back to juniors. Purple means they’ve gone to the Phantoms. Orange means they’re still with the Flyers. Red means they’re injured and haven’t participated in camp, but they also haven’t been moved. Dark grey means they were cut outright.
