Make that two shutouts for Steve Mason this season. In his first one, back on Nov. 28 against the New York Rangers, he stopped 24 shots: a modest number, but not necessarily eye-popping or game-stealing.
But then there was his effort against the Canucks last night, in which he stopped all 36 pucks Vancouver sent his way. Thirty-six is the third-most pucks he’s stopped this season, behind just the 38 of 40 he turned aside in a shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings, and the 37 of 39 he prevented the Rangers from scoring on in a win. It’s also tied with the 36 of 40 he stopped in an overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
When you dig beyond that and further into his career, though, you find that 36 is the most pucks he’s stopped in a shutout since he stopped 40 against the San Jose Sharks, all the way back on Feb. 10, 2010 – when he was playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
