Felix Sandstrom joins the Phantoms

It was announced today that goaltender Felix Sandstrom will be joining the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for their final three games of the season.

Sandstrom, 22, was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. With HV71 Jonkoping of the Swedish Hockey League, Sandstrom served as the backup to starter Jonas Gunnarsson, appearing in 19 regular season games this season. His 91.05 save percentage was good enough for 17th in the league among all netminders.

After qualifying for the quarterfinals by out-scoring Rögle BK 8-4 across the two qualification games, HV71 dropped game seven of their seven game series versus Färjestad BK last Wednesday, ending their season.

Sandstrom had previously joined the Phantoms at the end of last season, but appeared in zero games as the team prepared for a playoff run. Now that the team is all but mathematically eliminated — they’d have to win their three remaining games by a large margin, and the Providence Bruins would have to lose their three remaining games by a large margin for them to make it — there’s an outside chance that we see him start his first AHL game before the season comes to a close.
