Flyers select Alex Ciernik with 120th overall pick

The Flyers’ next pick of the fourth round is in the books, and it’s Alex Ciernik, a speedy left winger who spent last season playing in Sweden.

Ciernik is another slightly undersized player – he’s listed at 5-foot-10 and 179 pounds at present – but there’s a lot to like in his skillset. He’s anotjer very strong skater, with an explosive stride and very good edges, making him a threat to beat defenders both in a straight line and in closer quarters in-zone, making use of quick cuts and deft weaving. The scoring numbers don’t absolutley jump off the page, but his 12 points in 25 games between Sodertalje and Vasterviks in the Allsvenskan as a 17 year old are certainly respectable. His 21 points in 18 games in the tier below – J20 Nationell – is a bit more eye catching.  Overall, though, he plays a fast, tenacious game and brings a lot of potential upside.

He’s another player who might be a bit of a project, might need a little more time to develop, but has the potential to produce at a level beyond what might be expected in a player taken at this point in the draft.
