Brayden Schenn scored this beauty of a goal Saturday night in the Adirondack Phantoms’ 6-3 win over the Portland Pirates. It was their season opener, and Schenn’s goal gave the Phantoms a two-goal lead that they’d never relinquish.
It was good timing, too. Portland was on the power play and looking to tie the score with roughly six minutes to go in the third period. Sean Couturier’s great lead pass sprung Schenn, who made the defender look quite silly.
How’s that for a penalty killing unit, by the way? There are NHL-caliber players on every team in the AHL this season thanks to the lockout, but the Phantoms were able to ice a four-man unit of Schenn, Couturier, Marc-Andre Bourdon and Erik Gustafsson. That’s not too shabby at all at the AHL level.
Schenn later added an empty-netter to seal the win. Couturier had a power play goal in the second period, while Harry Zolnierczyk, Garrett Roe and Tye McGinn also added goals.
