Flyers prospect report: A boring week for prospect watching

Notable Phantoms performers this week:

  • 11/2 – 4-3 OT LOSS
  • 11/3 – 3-2 OT WIN/

Philippe Myers (D): 2 GP, 2 assists, 4 shots, 4 PIM
Undrafted Free Agent

Points are good! Myers has eight of them (three goals, five assists). He had an assist in each game this weekend, including a secondary assist in the tying goal to force OT on Saturday.

Mark Friedman (D): 2 GP, 2 assists, 5 shots
2014 3rd Round Pick, 86th overall

In news I likely wouldn’t have predicted early this season, Friedman has just as many points as Phil Myers with eight in his first 11 games.

German Rubtsov (C): 2 GP, 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots
2016 1st Round Pick, 22nd overall

The Germ picked up his fifth goal of the season on a short-handed chance on Friday. He has eight points in 11 games as well.

Mikhail Vorobyev (C), 2 GP, 1 goal, 1 assist, 5 shots
2015 4th Round Pick, 104th overall

Vorobyev is back in the AHL after failing to make an impression on the NHL head coach. He picked up his first points of the season in Friday’s game.

Carsen Twarynski (LW): 2 GP, 1 shot, 2 PIM
2016 3rd Round Pick, 82nd overall

Twarynski has more penalty minutes this season (11) than he does points (1), shots (10) and games played (9).

David Kaše (RW): 2 GP, 1 goal, 2 shots
2015 5th Round Pick, 128th overall

Kaše is another first-year AHLer who hasn’t had much trouble putting up points. The 21-year old has five points (three goals, two assists) in eight games.

Connor Bunnaman (C): 3 GP, 2 shots, 2 PIM
2016 4th Round Pick, 109th overall

No points for The Bun-man means he still has just two points (one goal, one assist) in his first seven AHL games.

Carter Hart (G): 1 GP, 4 GA, 32 saves
2016 2nd Round Pick, 48th overall

Hart got Friday’s start and picked up his 2nd OT loss of the season and is 2-2-2 overall. His SV% sits at .882 in the early-going.

Notable Canadian junior performers this week:

Morgan Frost (C), Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)
2017 1st Round Pick, 27th overall

  • 10/31 – 2 assists, 3 shots, 13 for 19 FOW
  • 11/2 – 1 assist, 5 shots, 4 PIM, 17 for 24 FOW
  • 11/4 – 2 shots, 2 PIM, 16 for 21 FOW/

Not your typical week from Frost, who was putting up nearly-two-points-per-game numbers prior to this week. Not on the scoresheet above is Frost did get a shootout goal in Sunday’s loss to Erie. Frost has 33 points (12 goals, 21 assists) in 19 games.

Isaac Ratcliffe (LW), Guelph Storm (OHL)
2017 2nd Round Pick, 35th overall

  • 10/30 – 2 goals, 4 shots
  • 11/2 – 2 shots, 4 PIM
  • 11/3 – 2 shots/

Ratcliffe, if he keeps this pace up, could eclipse 50 goals in his fourth OHL season. He has 13 goals and 8 assists in 17 games this season.

Matthew Strome (LW), Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL)
2017 4th Round Pick, 106th overall

After praising Strome’s recent hot streak, he of course went cold this week and doesn’t have any points in his last three games. Strome has 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) in 17 games.

Maksim Sushko (RW), Owen Sound Attack (OHL)
2017 4th Round Pick, 107th overall

  • 11/2 – 2 assists, 8 shots
  • 11/3 – 1 goal, 1 shot
  • 11/4 – 1 assist, 1 shot/

A fine week for Sushko who now has nine points in his last 10 games. He has 13 in 18 games overall.

Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall

  • 11/2 – 1 shot
  • 11/3 – 2 assists, 2 shots/

Wylie remains one of the top scoring defensemen in the WHL with 15 (two goals, 13 assists) in 17 games. That is ninth best in the league.

Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent

  • 11/2 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 shots, 4 PIM
  • 11/3 – 3 shots, 2 PIM
  • 11/4 – 3 shots/

After no points in his first eight games, Zamula has put together nine (2 G, 7 A) in his last 10.

Notable European performers this week

Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall

  • 10/30 – 1 shot, 20:49 TOI
  • 11/1 – 1 shot, 14:15 TOI
  • 11/3 – 1 shot, 17:04 TOI/

Högberg, after scoring his first goal/point of the season last week, is silent once again. The time-on-ice for the team remain consistent, which is a very good thing.

David Bernhardt (D), Djurgårdens IF (SHL)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall

  • 10/31 – DNP
  • 11/1 – 0 shots, 04:49 TOI
  • 11/3 – 0 shots, 08:00 TOI/

Bernhardt’s time-on-ice dips again and also sees him miss another game. It’s very likely his early-season injury is holding him back once again.

Adam Ginning (D), Linköping HC (SHL)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall

  • 10/30 – 3 shots, 17:12 TOI
  • 11/1 – 0 shots, 11:52 TOI
  • 11/3 – 0 shots, 16:46 TOI/

The 18 year old remains at one goal for the season.

Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall

  • 10/30 – 2 shots, 16:18 TOI
  • 11/1 – 0 shots, 09:39 TOI
  • 11/3 – 0 shots, 08:30 TOI/

It’s hard to tell without really knowing his role and usage, but Lycksell has hit a bit of an offensive dry-spell. He has just five points (one goal, four assists) in 16 games.

Marcus Westfält (C), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall

  • 10/30 – 0 shots, 07:11 TOI
  • 11/1 – 0 shots, 07:33 TOI
  • 11/3 – DNP/

No offense (see: points) yet for Westfält since joining Brynäs in seven games. Had five (one goal, four assists) in eight games for the J20 club earlier this season.

Felix Sandström (G), HV71 (SHL)
2015 3rd Round Pick, 70th overall

Not looking great for Sandström, who was the backup in all three games last week. He has struggled this season to a tune of a .893 SV% in 7 games.

Samuel Ersson (G), Västerås IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall

  • 10/31 – 2 GA, 49 saves
  • 11/2 – 2 GA, 25 saves/

Don’t look now, but Ersson has the best SV% in Allsvenskan with .934. He is nearly 10 years younger than the goalie right behind him.

Ivan Fedotov (G), Salavat Yulaev Ufa (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall

Fedotov remained the backup for Salavat last week, but didn’t see action. He returned to his VHL team following the weekend.

Kirill Ustimenko (G), MHK Dynamo St. Petersburg (MHL)
2017 3rd Round Pick, 80th overall

No games for Ustimenko this week, but I should note he was selected to represent Team Russia for the U20 Super Series vs. CHL Hockey.

Notable collegiate performers this week

Joel Farabee (LW), Boston University
2018 1st Round Pick, 14th overall

  • 11/1 – 1 goal, 7 shots
  • 11/3 – 1 assist, 1 shot, 2 PIM/

Farabee scored his second goal of the season on Thursday. The freshman has three points in his first 6 NCAA games.

Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

Laczynski out again for both games this weekend due to an injury. He had five points (two goals, three assist) in his first 5 games prior to the injury.

Gavin Hain (C/W), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall

Hain returned from an injury, but was the 13th skater and did not see action for UND vs. Wyatt Kalnyuk and Wisconsin this weekend. The freshman has one assist in his first three games.

Jay O’Brien (C), Providence College
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall

  • 11/3 – 3 shots, 2 for 6 FOW/

O’Brien is back healthy and in the lineup. The freshman is still looking for his first NCAA point after five games.

Brendan Warren (LW), University of Michigan
2015 3rd Round Pick, 81st overall

  • 11/2 – 3 shots, 0 for 1 FOW
  • 11/3 – 2 shots/

Warren is hardly a prospect at this point. The senior has two points (one goal, one assists) in seven games.

Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall

No games for Cates and UofMD, but they will be back in action next weekend with a pair of games against Colorado College. The freshman has put up an impressive six points (three goals, three assists) in his first 8 games.

Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

  • 11/2 – 0 shots, 4 PIM
  • 11/3 – 2 shots, 2 PIM/

An uncharacteristically sub-par weekend for Kalynuk, who had been racking up the points (nine in six games).

Jack St. Ivanny (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112th overall

  • 11/2 – 1 assist, 1 shot
  • 11/3 – 1 shot/

St. Ivany picks up his first ever collegiate point on Saturday.

Matej Tomek (G), University of Nebraska-Omaha
2015 3rd Round Pick, 90th overall

Tomek did not play in either game this weekend against Miami. The 21 year old has appeared in just two games and has a .762 SV%.
