The Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia Phantoms closed the Spectrum in 2009 with a preseason farewell game. Five years later, with the Phantoms moving back from their upstate New York outpost back into our vicinity, the teams will open a new arena.
A Lehigh Valley Phantoms spokesman confirmed to BSH this morning reports that the Flyers and Phantoms will play in a preseason exhibition at the brand new PPL Center in Allentown, the new home of the Phantoms. The game will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 and will be the first hockey game played at the new barn.
Correction: an earlier version of this story said the game would be played the 26th.
It won’t be Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek vs. an AHL team, though. Each team will be a split squad, with Flyers and Phantoms players playing on both side. Indeed, we could actually see some NHL regulars in AHL sweaters for the game, which would be pretty cool.
