Shayne Gostisbehere will not make the Flyers out of training camp. Nor will Scott Laughton. The two borderline NHL-AHL rookie players will at least begin the season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers announced today.
They cut the two, along with enforcer Zack Stortini. Because of his age, Stortini must clear waivers before being sent down to the Phantoms officially, but that shouldn’t be an issue.
In the case of Gostisbehere, he had a really strong camp and there’s no doubt that he has skills that some current Flyers NHL-level defensemen do not. But the general consensus seems to be that he needs more experience at the pro level, in particular with his defensive game. AHL time will not hurt him.
Samuel Morin is still in camp and cannot go to the AHL. It’s possible that the Flyers keep him around in the NHL for nine games before they send him back to his junior team in Rimouski, or they could send him down after the preseason is complete. Nine NHL regular season games is the limit with regards to his contract kicking in.
In the case of Laughton, he just didn’t have a good enough camp to make the team. The Flyers are jammed up at center, and he had to beat a plethora of guys who had better camps: Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Blair Jones and Jason Akeson, namely. All three of those guys remain on the team as of now.
There’s one more preseason game remaining on Thursday in Washington. Final cuts are expected Friday.
