This is a Flyers blog, obviously, but for the most part, we’re all fans of the other Philly teams too. So with that, I’ve decided to write a once-weekly post on the week that was around the Philadelphia sports landscape. Without further ado, the week of December 1st – 7th in Philly sports…
Monday, December 1
The Phillies decided to not give arbitration to Pat Burrell and Jamie Moyer. What’s that mean? Phillies Nation had an excellent post on the subject.
While I’m not big on acting sentimental, as Amaro put it, I’m all for making smart decisions. Do I want Burrell back for three or four years? Maybe not. Do I want Moyer back for a ridiculous amount? Tuesday, December 2
Coming off an ugly loss to the Bulls at home, which included Andre Miller getting SCHOOLED by Derrick Rose [The 700 Level clutch with the YouTube], the Sixers took the second half of a home-and-home with a 103-95 win at United Center. Andre Iguodala scored 25.
Flyers beat the Lightning in OT, despite Scott Hartnell’s shenanigans.
Wednesday, December 3
The Sixers lost to the Lakers as Kobe put on a show in his old hometown. Elton Brand got hurt, too.
Thursday, December 4
The Phillies reportedly made an offer to free agent pitcher Derek Lowe. Some reaction: Thoughts On Derek Lowe, philliesnation.com.
The Flyers lost to the Devils in overtime, 3-2.
The Courier-Post laid off Mike Radano, longtime Phillies beat writer [Phillies Nation]. This is sadly something we’re going to be seeing more and more with newspapers and their struggles as we further embark into the internet age. New York Islanders’ blogger Dominik of Lighthouse Hockey also wrote this week about struggles surrounding his teams writers at Long Island’s daily paper, Newsday.
Friday, December 5
Down 15 at the end of the Sixers storm back and win in Detroit against Allen Iverson and the Pistons. Exciting? Sixers? Basketball! Sixers blog Liberty Ballers.
The Phantoms beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 6-3.
Saturday, December 6
The Kixx (remember them?) beat the Massachusetts Twisters 16-7 in their second game of their National Indoor Soccer League season. The NISL, which has only five teams including Philly, is in its inaugural season. The Kixx have played in like thirty different leagues in the past 13 years and are one win shy of 250 in their history. They opened the season back on November 15th (that’s right, three weeks between games) at the Spectrum, beating the same Massachusetts club 34-11 (!).
The Sixers lost to the Nets, 95-84, at the Center. They bring you up on Friday and let you down on Saturday, very much like some girls I know…
The Flyers beat the Hurricanes in OT, 2-1.
The Phantoms beat the Binghamton Senators 5-2.
Sunday, December 7
The Eagles beat the Giants! No way! 20-14! Things are looking up for the boys in green… but don’t get your hopes up too fast as the Redskins and Cowgirls are still on the schedule.
The Phantoms beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-1.
Looking at the week ahead: baseball begins its Winter Meetings in Vegas, the Eagles face the Bengals, and the Sixers will probably try to play basketball or something.
