Per request, we’ve started adding the fantastic numbers from Time on Ice to our recaps. If you haven’t been checking them, you really are missing out.
But fear not! As part of our coverage of the playoffs, we’ll be taking a look at these stats to get a better picture of the game.
Here, we’ll be looking at zone start, corsi, and fenwick numbers. Jump below to see who played the tough minutes, who was sheltered, who controlled the play, and who couldn’t get out of their own end.
First, we’ll look at zone start, since that is always important context. Remember all of these numbers are even-strength only. Since it is only one game, the numbers are pretty small.

Just looking at this shows that Peter Laviolette was able to keep Lukas Krajicek and Oskars Bartulis off the ice on defensive zone draws. That’s a good strategy.
On the other side, Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, and Braydon Coburn started in the defensive zone quite often. On the forward side, Richards was the centerman of choice in the defensive zone, and Darroll Powe strangely started all of his shifts at center-ice or back.
Basically, this is just to put the Corsi and Fenwick numbers into some context.

Jut at first glass, you notice that Jeff Carter, Kimmo Timonen, and Scott Hartnell got severely outshot. When you look deeper, you see just how badly Scott Hartnell played last night.
Hartnell
Acknowledging the context from above, Hartnell started 3 shifts in the defensive zone and 2 each in the neutral and offensive zones. That’s essentially even, so he’d be forgiven for giving up 2 more shots due to his extra defensive zone draw. But Hartnell took it a step further.
First, Hartnell was on the ice for the Devils goal. Then, in the shots on target category, the Flyers were out-shot with him on the ice 8-1. When you add those shots that were directed at the net but missed (his Fenwick), the Flyers were out-shot 14-1 with Scott Hartnell on the ice. His Corsi doesn’t get a whole lot better, since both teams had 3 blocked shots. Either way, Scott Hartnell was a huge liability on the ice last night.
The only redeeming stat for Hartnell is that the team was out-shot 39-19. That includes missed shots and blocked shots. While Hartnell was atrocious, the team wasn’t much better. Others (All numbers are goals + saved shots + missed shots):
- Danny Briere was down 8-1
- Jeff Carter was down 10-3
- Braydon Coburn was down 11-4
- Kimmo Timonen was down 14-6
- Oskars Bartulis was down 7-2
Only Dan Carcillo (up 4-3) and James van Riemsdyk (up 3-2) finished with a positive Fenwick. Only JVR finished with a positive Corsi (including blocked shots).
The entire team needs to do better in Game Two, since it’s very difficult to win a game when the other team gets more than twice as many pucks through to the net than you. But at least it wasn’t fourteen times as many.
Fourteen-to-One. Let that sink in.
